The International Day of Light, established by UNESCO in 2015 on May 16 to commemorate the creation of the world's first laser by T.H. Maiman in 1960, aims to highlight the crucial role of light and light-based technologies in science, culture, education, and sustainable economic development.

On the occasion of the International Day of Light, the Italian Physical Society (SIF) and the Italian Society of Optics and Photonics (SIOF) encourage the organization of events by young individuals focused on their education, such as workshops, seminars, and study days. They especially advocate for the participation of students in Master's and Ph.D. programs.
